The Challenge: Machining Two Internal Grooves in a Small Bore
A globally operating manufacturer of precision hydraulic components produces high volumes of parts made from SUS316F stainless steel (EN 1.4401 / 1.4404). The application required two highly precise internal grooves to be machined inside a small-diameter bore with maximum process reliability.
The previously used premium tooling solution repeatedly caused production issues:
- Tool life limited to 12,000 grooves
- Frequent tool offset adjustments required
- Fluctuating process capability (Cp/Cpk)
- Continuous operator intervention
- Inconsistent surface finish
- Increasing dimensional variation
The result was unnecessary machine downtime, higher manufacturing costs, and reduced process reliability.
