33% Longer Tool Life in Internal Grooving

Enhanced Process Reliability and Cost Efficiency with the IFANGER MTNN Grooving Solution

Challenging Internal Grooving Applications? Together, We’ll Find the Right Solution.

Machining small internal grooves is one of the most demanding operations in precision machining. Tight tolerances, difficult-to-machine materials, and reliable chip evacuation place exceptionally high demands on both the cutting tool and the machining process.

Together with our technology and distribution partner IFANGER, we develop solutions that go far beyond replacing individual cutting tools—they optimize entire manufacturing processes for long-term performance and profitability.

A recent customer project clearly demonstrates the potential of a perfectly engineered tooling solution.
Ein aktuelles Kundenprojekt zeigt eindrucksvoll, welches Potenzial in einer optimal abgestimmten Werkzeuglösung steckt.

The Challenge: Machining Two Internal Grooves in a Small Bore

A globally operating manufacturer of precision hydraulic components produces high volumes of parts made from SUS316F stainless steel (EN 1.4401 / 1.4404). The application required two highly precise internal grooves to be machined inside a small-diameter bore with maximum process reliability.

The previously used premium tooling solution repeatedly caused production issues:

  • Tool life limited to 12,000 grooves
  • Frequent tool offset adjustments required
  • Fluctuating process capability (Cp/Cpk)
  • Continuous operator intervention
  • Inconsistent surface finish
  • Increasing dimensional variation

The result was unnecessary machine downtime, higher manufacturing costs, and reduced process reliability.

The Solution

Together with IFANGER, the customer’s machining process was thoroughly analyzed, resulting in an application-specific tooling solution.
The optimized system consisted of:

  • IFANGER Swiss-MicroTurn MTNN 42006-R-TiAlN Grooving Tool
  • Vibration-damping Swiss-MicroTurn tool holder
  • QuickChange tool changing system
  • Ultra-thin TiAlN coating
  • Ultra-sharp cutting edges specifically designed for micro internal grooving
  • This combination delivers exceptional repeatability, minimizes vibration, and enables repeatable tool changes without the need for requalification or additional setup.

The Results: 33% Increase in Tool Life

The results speak for themselves.
Before: 12,000 grooves
After: 16,000 grooves

In addition, the customer achieved significant process improvements:

✔ No tool offset corrections required
✔ Consistent surface finish (Ra 0.8 µm)
✔ Stable Cp/Cpk values
✔ Significantly reduced machine downtime
✔ Improved process reliability
✔ Highly repeatable production
✔ Reduced operator intervention
✔ More cost-effective high-volume production

Following a successful production trial on a single machine and a comprehensive evaluation of the machining process, the customer confirmed the outstanding performance of the IFANGER solution. Based on these results, the application was expanded from the initial test machine to four production machines.

The customer was highly satisfied with the improved machining performance, outstanding component quality, and exceptional process stability.

Why Does This Solution Perform So Well?

Success was not achieved through a single cutting tool—it was the result of a professionally engineered machining system.

The IFANGER MTNN Grooving System offers:

  • Ultra-sharp cutting edges
  • Low-vibration machining
  • Outstanding repeatability
  • Reliable, repeatable tool changes
  • Stable machining performance, even in very small bores
  • Optimized performance in stainless steel applications

For demanding machining operations, success depends not only on the cutting tool itself but on the interaction between tool geometry, tool holder, coating technology, and process engineering.

Although the IFANGER tooling solution represents a higher initial investment than the previously used tooling system, the customer concluded that the improvements in component quality, process stability, tool life, and the significant reduction in operator intervention more than justified the investment.

These benefits translated into substantially lower total manufacturing costs and greater value added per component.
